Choose Your Style

Since you’ve picked out your products and tools, it’s time to think about your overall look. There are two things to consider when choosing a makeup style: whether it suits your personality and whether it’s appropriate for the occasion.

  • Do you have a bold personality? If so, go with a statement look like bold eye shadow or bright lipstick!
  • Are you going to be wearing this look in public? If so, make sure that what you’re doing is appropriate for the occasion (for example, don’t wear dark purple lipstick if it’s an interview).
  • How old are you? Makeup trends change over time—so choose something that suits your age! For example: older women should avoid bright pink eyeshadow unless they’re dressing up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

When considering what kind of style works best with the products and tools that you’ve chosen, keep these questions in mind:

Prime Your Face

It’s time to prime your face.

Primers are some of the most glorious things in makeup they’re like the foundation for your foundation. They help makeup stay on longer, and they have a whole host of other benefits like helping minimize pores and wrinkles, making skin look brighter and more even-toned, and giving you an overall dewier complexion.

There are primers for every skin type; if you have normal or oily skin (you know who you are), go for an oil-based primer like Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water.

If you have dry skin, try Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer or NARS Illuminator Corrector Fluid as a primer instead.

Apply Foundation

Your first step is to apply foundation. This should always be done in the morning; applying makeup at night can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

You want to start with a thin layer of foundation on your face, neck, and chest (if you’re wearing it). If necessary, apply concealer or powder over this layer before adding bronzer.

Conceal Dark Under-Eye Circles

Dark under-eye circles can be a real drag, but we’ve got just the thing to cover them up.

Here’s what you’ll need:

A concealer that matches your skin tone and is creamy, lightweight, and non-comedogenic (this means it won’t clog pores).

If you have dry skin or live in a cold climate, opt for an extra moisturizing formula; if your face is on the oily side or if you live in a humid climate, choose one that dries down completely.

You can find these products at drugstores like CVS or Walgreens (Sonia Kashuk makes some of our favorite affordable options) as well as from some department stores like Nordstrom (try Benefit Boi-ing). The key here is finding one that really matches your exact shade—you don’t want it to look like thick paint smeared across your face!

Conceal Acne And Grime Spots

If you have acne or grime spots on your face, concealer will help. First, apply foundation to even out the tone of your skin. Then apply concealer to cover any dark spots.

Mascara is essential for many women because it adds volume and length to their lashes—and can also make their eyes look bigger!

Apply a thin layer at the base of your upper lashes, then repeat for lower lashes once the first coat has dried. You can add coats as necessary until you achieve desired results; however, be careful not to overdo it or else you’ll end up with spidery eyelashes that won’t look natural in photos.

Don’t forget liner! It’s one of those things that not everyone uses every day but those who do tend to love it maybe even more than mascara! Simply draw a very thin line along both upper lash lines with either liquid or gel liner (or both!).

This step really helps define and elongate the eye shape while making them appear brighter by adding definition where none existed before–so if you’re feeling tired this morning but still want looking refreshed for today’s big meeting at work/school/etc., give this trick a try!

Apply Bronzer

Bronzer is the most versatile product in your makeup arsenal, because it can do so many things. First, it gives a healthy glow to the skin.

Second, bronzer can be used to add color back into pale or unevenly tanned skin (be careful not to apply too much).

Thirdly, bronzer can also be used as an all-over face powder or blush. Lastly (but certainly not least), bronzer is perfect for contouring your face whether you want to carve out cheekbones or create shadows under your eyes!

Contour Your Face

To contour your face, apply a bronzer or powder that’s two shades darker than your skin tone to the areas where you want to create definition.

Next, use a highlighter to add more depth and dimension by applying it directly under the cheekbones (where they naturally occur) and at the top of your forehead, down the bridge of your nose and along the jawline.

For added color on an average day, try using a cream blush in place of powder on just one side of your face it creates depth without making you look like you’ve been outside all day (but if you have been outside all day…that’s okay too).

Finally, if you’re looking for something extra-special during date night or some other occasion where things are going really well: Contour your jawline with this same technique!

Highlight And Blush

You can apply a highlighting or contouring powder to the areas of your face you want to highlight, such as:

  • the forehead
  • along the tops of your cheekbones (this makes it look like you have cheekbones!)
  • under your chin and on the sides of your jaw. (It’s like a reverse “V” shape).
  • Underneath the eyes for that beautiful glowy effect.

Apply Eyeliner And Mascara (Curled Lashes Look Great!).

Now it’s time to apply eyeliner and mascara (curled lashes look great!). Apply eyeliner to the top and bottom lash line, then add a coat of mascara to the top and bottom lashes. Apply mascara to the top lashes first, then coat your bottom ones.

Fill In Eyebrows To Match Your Hair Color

Use an eyebrow pencil to fill in the gaps and shape your brows. This step is optional if you have naturally full, dark brows, but if you’re like me and struggle to grow thick hair on top of your big forehead, this step is essential!

Set the color by brushing a brow powder over them. I use MAC products for all of my makeup needs because they’re relatively low-cost (especially at Nordstrom Rack) and high quality.

The one downside is that MAC products are hard to find outside of a store or online retailer like Nordstrom Rack; however, there are plenty of similar brands available at both drugstores and department stores that will do just fine!

Match Lipstick Or Lip Gloss To The Season And Your Outfit

If you’re wearing a dress, match your lipstick and lip gloss to the color of your outfit. Choose a bold red if you’re going out in the evening, or go for something more subtle if it’s daytime.

If you have a lot of different colors in your outfit (like a lot of blue), choose one shade to wear on your lips that matches everything else.

If there are several shades of brown, try using an orange-y hue as an accent color instead of wearing all three together.

Whatever color scheme you choose for an event or day out, remember that any eyeshadow will go! A bright eye shadow will make any look pop.
